Botley Choral Society is a thriving choir of around 100 members, formed in 1923, which relishes in the rich tradition of choral music in this country. Concerts are given three times a year – at Easter, when performances are held at All Saints Church, Botley and another local venue, and either a St. Cecilia-tide or Christmas Concert. In May each year, the choir also takes part in the Winchester and County Music Festival, formed in 1921, by singing with other constituent choirs in either Winchester Cathedral or Romsey Abbey. Botley Choral Society Director of Music, David Burgess, conducts the concert in Romsey Abbey every other year. In 2012 new sounds were heard in the Abbey when Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater was performed with percussion from the Middle East and ‘ethnic vocals’ fused into the framework of the 13th century Roman Catholic poem.

Within two years, Botley Choral Society will have performed a wide repertoire, from a concert with Brass and organ, including Rutter’s Gloria, to Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle – and from CPE Bach’s Magnificat to a Last Night of the Proms. Professional soloists enhance these performances, along with an orchestra when space permits! Concerts planned for 2017 include a ‘Baroque Fest’ of Vivaldi and Pergolesi in April and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at Christmas.

The catchment area for Botley Choral Society is wide, embracing Winchester, Southampton, Gosport and the Meon Valley – but the membership unites in its pure enjoyment of singing, which has benefits for the soul and general well-being. We rehearse between 7:30PM and 9:30PM each Wednesday night at All Saint’s Church, Botley. Contact us if you wish to join.

The Society is a member of the Making Music (formerly the National Federation of Music Societies).
